The AOUON Archive project began in 1977 to gather and document the poster-work of modern progressive movements in the United States. Though earlier work is included, its focus is on the domestic political poster renaissance, which began in 1965 and continues to this day. The Archive gathers posters from all streams of progressive activity — from movements of protest, liberation, and affirmative action, trade-union and community struggles, to electoral and environmental organizing, community services, and visionary manifestos. |

From the From the Back of the Room; A NEW Doc. about Women in Punk My Space Text In 1991 a new phenomenon called Riot Girl spread from Olympia, Washington to Washington D.C., breaking the stereotypes and roles of the underground punk scene. This movement allowed women and girls to exercise more influence in the alternative music community. Riot Girl made a sizeable impact on independent music, as well as the women involved in it. However, in 1994 the movement dwindled and died, in part due to distorted reports by the mainstream media. In today’s hardcore punk scene, many of the messages of Riot Girl have been forgotten. Even though women still participate in the punk and hardcore community, there is a lack of a unifying message, and an absence of coherence to their contributions. This can be seen in the relationships that women share with one another, as well as in the lack of empathy that women often face from their male and female counterparts. Although the female presence in the music underground is not as influential as it once was, it is important to note that there are still women who contribute. To this end, we propose to document not only the history of Riot Girl and its impact, but also the state of women in hardcore punk today. With this documentary, we plan to give women the space to speak about their feelings and experiences, and re-establish a sense of empowerment and equality within the punk scene. It is our hope that by creating this portrait, women will feel a heightened sense of solidarity with one another, and everyone will gain a sense of understanding about how gender roles operate, even in a sub cultural dynamic. |

RGI is proud to sponsor Homo A GoGo: A Queer Music, Art, Film and Activism Festival. Homo A Go Go 2009 took place August 13-16th in San Francisco, CA. Every two years artists, musicians, writers, activists and festival goers come to Homo A Go Go from all over the world to create our own cultural landscape and community. The community we hope to create overlaps with, yet exists outside of the mainstream queer community and the independent music/arts community. We hope to encourage anti-war, anti-capitalist, anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-classist and anti-ableist ideals while providing a venue for non-mainstream queer culture. RGI is proud to sponsor HAGG and we here at RGI could not be more pleased to see so many of the artist that we work with on the their lineup. |
